Recording/Studio Session FAQ
-
If requested, 10-20 minutes can be spent getting a rough mix (vocal cleanup, basic balancing, basic reverb/delay on vocals). You will leave with a clean, loud recording. Some artists may choose to release the rough mix.
However, a full mix is a separate service, which covers in-depth effects and processing. (chops, drops, reverses, tape stop, reverse reverbs, time/pitch effects, manual tuning of vocals for natural pitch correction, harmony/dub alignment). Mastering is included.
-
In most cases, a two hour session allows for one song, maybe two songs if you work quickly and do not want a rough mix.
The first 15 minutes are session prep, spent downloading/importing the instrumental, calculating the tempo and key of the instrumental, adjusting the microphone, doing a mic check, checking headphone levels, setting the autotune for the artist.
An hour to an hour and a half spent recording (lead vocal, dubs, in & outs, harmonies/backgrounds, adlibs).
10-15 minutes spent arranging and comping the vocal takes, deciding what makes the final cut, what parts to swap, what to replace, etc.
20-30 minutes for a rough mix and 5 minutes to bounce the song.
-
Those types of tasks are done during the studio session. Vocal selection, comping, arranging, vocal production, are editing and production tasks.
-
By responding to the booking confirmation email and attaching the beat to the email as a “.wav”
Further instruction is provided in the booking confirmation email.
-
If you think you might be late to the studio session, please communicate that ahead of time. I may or may not be able to accommodate depending on my schedule for the day. If not, the session will end at its originally scheduled end time. If I am able to extend it, there will be an additional fee at the hourly rate for the length of the extension.
-
Please check the booking confirmation email. You are able to reschedule up to 24 hours in advance, after which you will lose the half deposit.
If it is an unforeseen emergency, I will accommodate a reschedule.
-
Files may be sent via Airdrop, email, or transferred to your storage device (usb flashdrive, hard drive).
-
Yes, vocal stems can be bounced and sent. It should happen during the session. If requested after the session, there will be a charge of half the hourly studio rate for each set of stems.
-
5 minutes per bounce. Bouncing happens during the session, after each song.
-
Please send the beat as “.wav” for highest quality.
-
The first 15 minutes is for setup:
-Downloading/importing the instrumental
-Calculating the tempo and key of the instrumental
-Adjusting the microphone, setting mic levels, checking headphone levels
-Setting the autotune for the artist.
-
DO NOT SEND MULTITRACKS FOR RECORDING. Send the .wav instrumental. Multitracks have a purpose in mixing, but for recording all they do is clutter the session.
-
If the artist does not allocate time to bouncing the necessary files during the studio session and requests them at a later date, the fee is 50% of the hourly rate of the engineer per separate bounce.

MIXING FAQ
-
Studio/Rough Mix - Delivered at the end of a recording session. Basic balancing, EQ and limiting is done to ensure you leave with a clean, loud recording. Some artists may choose to release the Studio mix.
-
Vocal Mix - Mixing vocals to a 2-track/stereo instrumental. Involves in-depth vocal effects processing (e.g. reverse reverbs, throws, stutters, chops, drops, telephone effects, vocal layering)
Multitrack Mix - Sometimes a stereo instrumental damages the quality of a record because it is not properly balanced or it is clipping/distorting, oftentimes seen with beats downloaded from Youtube. With access to stems, the engineer has full control over each element, allowing the fine-tuning of dynamics, balance, and space. In this way, the engineer is able to provide a comprehensive mix; the engineer can be as detailed as the record demands, ensuring it is cohesive and meets professional standards within the genre.
